Founded by Louis-François Cartier in Paris in 1847, its regular customers soon included queens and princesses, including Princess Mathilde, the niece of Napoleon I and cousin both to the Emperor Napoleon III and to Empress Eugénie. As early as 1888 Cartier created the first bejewelled wristwatches for ladies. At the start of the 20th century Cartier's neo-classically inspired pieces of jewellery made of diamonds set in platinum were highly popular with royal and aristocratic customers from all over the world. On the occasion of the coronation of King Edward VII a Cartier shop was established in London.

Not long afterwards Cartier became the official jewellery supplier to the court of King Edward VII of England, King Alfons XIII of Spain, King Carlos I of Portugal, Czar Nicholas II of Russia and even of Paramindr Maha Chulalongkorn of Siam. In 1904 Louis Cartier, the eldest son of Louis Cartier, designed for his friend the Brazilian airman Alberto Santos-Dumont a watch which was specially manufactured to be worn on the wrist with a leather strap. From 1911 the Santos watch became available for people to buy in the shops. Since then Cartier has always demonstrated an innovative and often revolutionary approach to the design of jewellery and wristwatches, and was highly valued as official supplier of jewellery to many aristocratic and royal families throughout the world.
